The County Government of Vihiga has identified the Big four as the key pillars for development: Healthcare, Education, Trade and Agriculture, among others. The Department is driving and positioning Vihiga County as a prime investment destination as well as a hub for business, trade and finance.
The Department’s main activities are geared towards creating a conducive and supportive environment for business, especially through appropriate legislative framework to support business and investment activities. It is also responsible for stimulating domestic and foreign investment and is working to upgrade the entire framework for attracting investment — the lifeblood of industrial activity.
To this end the county is organizing the first Vihiga county investment conference from 21st to 23rd June, 2018 themed, “Unlocking the economic & entrepreneurial potential of Vihiga County”.
Mandate of the Department
The Constitution of Kenya under schedule 4 has devolved the following functions that relate to Trade development and regulation:
- Trade licenses (excluding regulation of professions)
- Fair trading practices
- Local tourism
The Department has three Directorates namely:
- Trade and Industry
To be a globally competitive and sustainable trade, tourism and entrepreneurship sector
To create an enabling environment through a legal and regulatory framework that will facilitate for a competitive, sustainable trade,tourism and entrepreneurship sector.
